Happy Anniversary

busy day

yesterday

sleepless night

night before

early rise

appointment

bloodwork drawn

prescription

filled again

hurry home

scarf down lunch

offer treats

get the dog

in the car

to groomer’s

at the mall

return shorts

hem unfurled

return dress

looked frumpy

return pants

too wrinkly

hair salon

cold water

“So sorry.”

“It’s okay.”

scalp frozen

back to mall

pick up shorts

groomer texts

dog ready

pick up dog

hurry home

husband calls

from dentist’s

mouth is numb

change of plans

can’t eat yet

bump back time

late dinner

30 years

wedded bliss

ups and downs

good times and

not so good

open cards

his card to

me is the

same card I

bought for him

too funny

card says “There’s

no one else

I’d rather

take this wild

ride with,” and

two little

stick figures

are riding

a roller

coaster with

their hands high

they are us

dips and turns

loop de loops

fears and fun

tears of joy

lots of laughs

memories

back at home

walk the dog

busy day

but good to

know we now

think even

more alike

after these years

together

What a treasure of a poem and slice! I was hearing the three syllable beats to We Will Rock You, and you guys are certainly rocking this thing called marriage and love. Congratulations on thirty wonderful years, and that same-card syndrome is hilarious – – you are indeed “one.” Congratulations on retirement, too. I know this new season will be the beginning of so much less stress and so much more togetherness and enjoyment. Sending high fives your way.

Thank you, Kim! We had a nice dinner, a good laugh, and we’re looking forward to our trip!

Kim said it perfectly, Lori. The image, “hem unfurled,” caught my attention and the precious reality that, after all these years, ups and downs, goods and not-so-goods, you have managed to grow together. Enjoy your beach celebration in July!

Thanks, Trish! I wore the shorts with the ruined hem (unbeknownst to me of course) to my husband’s tennis tournament this past weekend. He’s very athletic and sporty, and I’m…not. Anyway, we were on our way to the car when he said, “You have a very long string hanging down the back of your leg.” Sure enough, the entire hem of the shorts had unraveled and was trailing after me like a thin yellow tail. LOL.

Lori, you have captured the wild ride of marriage in a real world. Your words,” his card to me is the same card I bought for him.” bring smiles and a recognition of how you have grown more similar over time. Happy Anniversary

I really enjoyed reading your slice today. Congratulations on 30 years together. The fact that you both got the same card really made me smile!

Thank you! It was funny, especially since we decided to forgo gifts in lieu of our beach trip.

    Lori,
I loved your short lines that set the fast tempo for the day and all the tasks.
SO BUSY and yet, so much accomplished.

    Congratulations!

    Happy Anniversary, Lori!

Love how the three-syllable lines reflect the busy rhythm of your day.

Love the humor of the contrast between the what and the why, the spoken reaction and the thought:

    “return dress
    looked frumpy
    return pants
    too wrinkly
    hair salon
    cold water
    “So sorry.”
    “It’s okay.”
    scalp frozen”

And love, love, love that you and your husband bought the same card. Thirty years of coming together!

Isn’t it great when you buy each other the same card? We did that one year and laughed for half an hour. I love how your poem showed an ordinary day with an extraordinary celebration. Happy Anniversary!!! 🙂
