All day, I’ve been thinking about how nice it would be to have a grilled cheese sandwich, not just any grilled cheese sandwich…a grilled cheese sandwich prepared for me by someone who loves me. I remember, when I was in sixth grade, my parents took in two foster children. The little girl was eight-years-old, the same age as my younger sister. The little boy was three. While they lived with us, my parents told us we would no longer be eating school lunches. Instead, we would walk home for lunch. To this day, I’m not sure why. Perhaps it was a way to save money, or maybe my parents just wanted all of us to have a nice, quiet lunch at home together. All I know is that I will never forget those lunches…all four of us kids sitting on bar stools at the kitchen counter. Mom always served grilled cheese sandwiches – Wonder Bread smeared with butter, thick slices of American cheese. A little pan of Campbell’s tomato soup sputtered and boiled on the burner. Mom turned the heat down and let it simmer while she finished our sandwiches. Then she poured soup into four melamine bowls. With one hand, she deftly crushed some saltine crackers and sprinkled them on top of our soup. She always cut all our sandwiches diagonally…which meant, “I love you.”

Grilled cheese and tomato soup is one of our favorite Friday meals. I make ours with a slice os American cheese and a slice of provolone. Nice and gooey.

Grilled cheese and tomato soup are comfort food. I had it a lot when I was a kid… and so did my husband, so it’s still on our menu. Sometimes it’s just plain grilled bread and cheese. But sometimes we have add-ons like bacon or sliced tomatoes or both. And sometimes we put 3 different cheeses in it and it’s real gooey. I enjoyed reading your masterful story telling. I love your ending sentence.

Lori, you speak my love language here! I have just introduced my grandson, not yet two, to the buttery goodness of grilled cheese “fingers.” At first he was dubious, but now? I only hope he can write about the memory as lovingly as you have. Yum.

Lori, it has been a long time since I have even though of a grilled cheese with tomato soup on the side; however, you have my mouth watering. It screams love. Ly mom served them. I served them (with whole wheat bread). I do make mac and cheese (from scratch) for some of my grands who call it cheesy goodness. I think it’s grilled cheese tomorrow for me.
